kachuaについてabout us

kachua's respect for Indian handicrafts is based upon a deep understanding of Indian culture and has inspired us to create original fabrics and products with Indian artisans.
There are three important things involved in creating our products.

“Using natural materials”
“Handicraft and trading techniques”
“Face-to-face relations”

The process takes time and patience, but it gives a warm feeling of satisfaction that you don't get when using a machine. We aspire to create beautiful new things that will last generations, using love and traditional techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation.

Block print

Block Print

We make original items using a traditional Indian technique of printing on textiles, called “block print”. In this method we print patterns on fabrics by using a wooden block - to which color is added - and then used to print by hand.
We especially love to use the technique of “Dabu print-mud resist dye” with an Indigo and Kassis dye. It is a similar technique to batik.

We use Dabu for resist printing. The Dabu is a mud-resist paste made from rich earth, mixed with fine wheat flour, tree gum, lime and water. We mix these ingredients and then filter them out to get the paste for printing. After covering the wooden block with Dabu, artisans begin repeatedly starting designated areas to “resist” the dye.

Dyeing

kachua uses primarily “Indigo” and “Kassis” as dyes. “Kassis” is a ferrous sulfate (green vitriol). We make clothes based on blue and brown / grey from these two dyes.
The combination of Indigo and Kassis' colors and woodblock prints will change colors and designs innumerably. We always get excited how the fabrics get dyed and wooden block prints come out each time at the studio with our artisans in India.

Khadi

We use Indian cotton fabrics for block print. There are machine weaving fabrics, as well as hand-spun and hand woven fabrics. We call hand-spun and hand woven fabrics “Khadi” in INDIA. Khadi use “Charka” for making the threads. Charka are like spinning wheels.
It creates new yarn, and allows air inside the yarn. The more you use the softer Khadi fabrics become, so Khadi keeps people warm in winter, while keeping them cool during the summer. Further meaning is added by the fact that Khadi was a symbol of the Indian independence movement.
